SSA Abstract Awards

SSA Peter Bladin New Investigator Award

To be eligible the investigator must:

  • By undergoing or having completed an accredited post-graduate/undergraduate training program, or commenced full-time academic research, whichever is most recent, no more than 5 years before the closing date for abstracts

  • Be the first author on the paper

  • Have contributed substantially to the design and conduct of the research study

  • Nominate the SSA Peter Bladin New Investigator Award during the abstract submission process

  • Provide evidence of your new investigator status to the Conference Secretariat via email by Friday 28th April.

It is important to note that only one abstract per submitter can be nominated for this award. Previous winners of the award are ineligible.

The winner of the Peter Bladin award will receive AUD1,000 and a travel grant of up to AUD3,000 to attend Stroke 2023.

SSA Allied Health Scientific Award (SSA New Investigator Recovery Award)

This award will be presented to the best abstract submitted by a New Investigator in the field of Recovery. The winner will be selected from the Peter Bladin New Investigator Award applicants with an abstract submission in the relevant field.

Prize: $1000 cash + 12 month SSA membership

SSA New Investigator Award (New Investigator Acute Care Award)

This award will be presented to the best abstract submitted by a New Investigator in the field of Acute Stroke. The winner will be selected from the Peter Bladin New Investigator Award applicants with an abstract submission in the relevant field.

Prize: $1000 cash

SSA Bursary Awards

The Stroke Society of Australasia is pleased to offer multiple bursaries to help neurology and stroke registrars and fellows, or higher degree candidates (PhD, Masters) from any stroke discipline attend Stroke 2023.

To be considered for this bursary you must meet the below criteria:

  • Submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation

  • Be either be a trainee in stroke medicine (e.g. a Stroke Fellow, or Neurology trainee) or a higher degree candidate (e.g. PhD, Masters) in a stroke related discipline

  • Register to attend the Stroke 2023 Conference

The bursaries will be awarded depending on the independent scientific assessment of the submitted abstract. The SSA Executive will make all final decisions on these awards.

To apply for this bursary, please ensure you do the following:

  • Submit an abstract through the online submission portal

  • Provide your CV (maximum 2 pages), evidence of student enrolment (if relevant), details of your current position, and abstract title to the Conference Secretariat via email by Friday 28th April.

Abstract Awards open to all submitters (members and non-members)

Best Research Abstract

This award will be presented to the best abstract which makes a significant contribution to stroke research and/ or practice.

Prize: $500

Best New Investigator Abstract

This award will be presented to the best abstract whose first author (nominated presenter) has never submitted or presented an abstract to a State or National conference.

Prize: $500

Encouragement Award

The Encouragement Award will be presented to a first-time abstract presenter at a conference.

No application necessary (your eligibility will be determined during the abstract submission process).

Prize: Complimentary conference registration

ASNEN 2023 Acute Stroke Nurse Education Network Combined SSA/Smart Strokes Outstanding Nursing Abstract Award

This award will be presented to the highest graded nursing abstract.

No application necessary (your eligibility will be determined during the abstract submission process).

Prize: $1000 scholarship

Best stroke care or research for or with people with aphasia

This award will continue to recognise the most outstanding presentations by a team or individual who has demonstrated real-life improvements in care and greater adherence to national stroke guidelines (i.e. knowledge translation/ implementation science).

Prize: $300

Poster Award

The Poster Award will be selected from the top-ranked posters presented at the conference.

No application necessary

Prize: $500 cash

SSA Excellence in Stroke Award

This award acknowledges academic excellence in stroke across the winner’s career.

SSA Mentor Award

This award recognizes an individual who has excelled at mentoring others in achieving their career objectives through moral, social, and intellectual support.

A call for nominations will be sent out by the SSA Secretariat.

Stroke Foundation ‘Stroke Champion Award’ - APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED

This award recognises health professionals and researchers working five or more years, who demonstrate tremendous dedication to their work in the field of stroke.  The award acknowledges that outstanding contribution to the lives of stroke patients, survivors and carers is vital and should be commended.

A call for nominations will be sent out by the Stroke Foundation Secretariat.

SSA Honorary Life Members

SSA Honorary Life Membership awarded to the international invited speakers at the conference.

Indigenous Bursary Award - Applications close on Friday 16th June 2023

The Indigenous Bursary Award aims to provide financial support to individuals who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or Māori to attend the Stroke Society of Australasia Annual Scientific Meeting, as well as mentorship opportunities during (but not limited to) the SSA ASM.

Eligibility: 

  1. Individuals who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or Māori 

  2. Clinicians or academics, inclusive of:

    1. Medical practitioners

    2. Nurses

    3. Allied health staff

    4. Indigenous health and community workers

    5. Tertiary students in the above fields 

 The Bursay covers: 

  1. Funding for attendance at the SSA ASM, to a maximum value of $3000 and inclusive of:

    • Complimentary registration

    • 3 nights’ accommodation (reimbursed)

    • Return economy airfares (reimbursed)

  2. Free SSA membership for 3 years

  3. Formal mentorship opportunities (by an Indigenous or non-Indigenous mentor/s) tailored to the individual’s career path 

Application and selection process:

Applications for the Award must be made to the SSA in writing, using the approved application form addressing how the applicant meets each of the eligibility criteria for the Award. There will also be a brief interview of shortlisted candidates.

Applications are reviewed by an Award Review Panel that consists of an Indigenous panel member, and SSA committee members including Indigenous representatives within the SSA.
